What is the visibility of the cloud? ›

For operations and development teams, cloud visibility is the process of discovering how cloud resources are used, identifying potential issues that could impact application performance, and understanding resource utilization in a cloud environment.

Visibility allows security teams to identify potential vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, or unauthorized access points that could be exploited by malicious actors.

To gain visibility in cloud environments, it is key to have centralized data monitoring through the collection of logs produced within the cloud environment in one place.

Visibility in clouds varies from approximately ten meters in large cumulus clouds to several hundred meters in stratus-like clouds.

According to international definition, fog reduces visibility below 1 km (0.62 miles). Fog differs from cloud only in that the base of fog is at the earth's surface while clouds are above the surface. When composed of ice crystals, it is termed ice fog.

As an example, network visibility could allow you to detect when an IoT device starts sending volumes of data out of your network, which could indicate a potential cyber attack. You could also see when a new device connects to your network which may be important to note, even if it's not immediately cause for concern.

Within clouds, even if they are very thin, visibility is always less than in the surrounding clear air. Some clouds are dense enough to reduce visibility almost to zero.

Cloud amount is reported in oktas or eighths with the additional convention that: 0 oktas represents the complete absence of cloud. 1 okta represents a cloud amount of 1 eighth or less, but not zero. 7 oktas represents a cloud amount of 7 eighths or more, but not full cloud cover.

But what is interesting is that except from a mountaintop, your land view doesn't go much more than six miles, while your sky view easily goes twenty miles even with simple cumulus. With higher clouds, it may reach 40 miles or more, less in town, more in the plains.

Clouds appear when there is too much water vapour for the air to hold. The water vapour (gas) then condenses to form tiny water droplets (liquid), and it is the water that makes the cloud visible. These droplets are so small that they stay suspended in the air.

The global cloud cover averages around 67-68%, though it ranges from 56% to 73% depending on the minimum optical depth considered (lower when optical depth is large, and higher when it is low, such that subvisible cirrus clouds are counted).
